WORLD TEAMS’ TOURNEY
Contestants Vote For Stroke Play (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 22. In the world teams’ golf tourney to be held this year at St. Andrews from October 8 to 11, and for which New Zealand has entered, teams of four will contest four rounds of stroke play. The tournament is for the Eisenhower Trophy. When a vote was held on whether countries favoured match play or stroke play, the latter was favoured by 29 countries’ votes to 3. These details were reported to
a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Golf Association by Mr D. O. White, who returned recently from a conference of the World Amateur Golf Council in Washington. The fact that this biennial competition is to be limited to a maximum of five days’ play with no more than one round being played each day, caused some concern to the council. Tt seems opportunities for a team to do its best would be very limited, particularly if the tourney is in
future to be on the match play basis. The reason given at the world conference for limiting play to one round a day was the hot weather in some countries in October.
