Basketball FIRST WIN OF SEASON

Teachers Beat Sacred Heart

To permit teams to give demonstrations of the international rules, morning games were played in the seventh round of the Canterbury Basketball Association’s senior competition. These games marked the end of a nine-a-side basketball in the association’s competitions. Kakatai gave its finest display of the season and decisively defeated St. Nicholas in a high-scoring game: West Old Girls was rather lucky to beat Digby’s, and Teachers’ College recorded its first win this season—against Sacred Heart. Technical had the bye. Results were:— Kakatai 32, St. Nicholas 19. West Old Girls 19, Digby’s 14. Teachers’ Col. 18, Sacred Heart 16. Points at the close of the first round games are:—Technical 12, Kakatai 8, West Old Girls 8. Sacred Heart 6, St. Nicholas 4, Digby’s 2, Teachers* College 2. KAKATAI v. ST. NICHOLAS Kakatais teamwork was excellent and forwards L. Price, J. Dunlop and A. Kirkwood were most accurate shots. St. Nicholas took some time to settle down, but when u aid the game provided an interesting contrast in forward tactics. Kaka- > tax’s able trio, with deft passing and good understanding, worked its way right into the circle, but the St. Nicholas forwards, A. Hartley, J. Rogers, and J. Hartland, scored some spectacular goals. At half-time, the score was Kakatai 17. St. Nicholas 10. Kakatai’s superiority In the second spell was more pronounced, and the centre-players, H. Price, G. Forward, and N. White, supported their forwards competently. Though the result was never in doubt. St. Nicholas deserved credit for its resourceful play against a most skilful combination. The final score was: Kakatai 32. St. Nicholas 19. The referee was Mrs D. Hughes. WEST OLD GIRLS V. DIGBY’S West Old Girls gained a lead of three goals before • Digby’s settled down. Determined defence by Digby’s, H. Dreaver, C. Orsbourne, and C. Roberts, then checked West’s assault. Play in the first half was very patchy with the ball travelling from one goal to another without any conclusive result. Just before half-time, from competent play by centres B. Cameron and K. Williams. West gained scoring chances, and J. Wright shot accurately to make the score at half-time: Digby’s 9. West Old Girls 8.

Digby’s made a determined effort in the second spell to break up the West attack, but erratic shooting by its forwards proved costly and West forwards soon turned these lapses to their advantage. Excellent shooting by J. Wright and P. Telfer allowed West to increase its lead, and West was able to retain the advantage. The final score w as = West 19. Digby’s 14. The referee was Mrs F. Gough. SACRED HEART V. TEACHERS’

Teachers’ College led by seven goals to three before the Sacred Hart forwards found form, and for the remainder of the first spell play was very keen as Sacred Heart attacked and Teachers’ College countered each move with intelligent tactics. Sacred Heart forwards had a good burst of accurate goaling just before halftime when the score was Teachers’ Colege 10, Sacred Heart 8. In the second spell the score remained level until 14-all, when Sacred Heart’s J. Doocey twice goaied brilliantly. Teachers’ College varied its tactics well at this critical stage, and, by careful teamwork and sound positional play, kept play in its territory. In the remaining five minutes, infringements by Sacred Heart cost it possession on at least four occasions, and this deterioration in play was apparent till the final whistle when Teachers’ College was leading by 18 goals to 16. Teachers’ College forward and centre thirds displayed admirable concentration, and P. Bona facto and J. King were consistent and resourceful at all times. H. Instill gave another fine display in the forward area. Sacred Heart forwards. P. Gallagher, J. Doocey and P. Glubb have not yet developed confidence in each other, and though their individual performances showed improvement. the teamwork of this third lacked stability. The referee was Mr R. Overend.
