Table Tennis TOWN BEATS COUNTRY

First Contest At Darfield

In the first Town-Country match arranged by the Canterbury Table Tennis Association, Town beat Country by 22 matches to 10 at Darfield on Saturday. The Town men were generally superior and won nearly all their matches, but the Country team’s women players, is usual, were harder to beat.

The match served two purposes, that of letting enthusiasts in countiy districts see some of the province's best players in action, and bringing the best country players to the notice of" .the Canterbury selector. At the end of the evening the provincial selector (Mr P. A. Williamson) announced that three members of the Country team, E. Drewitt, A. N Chamberlain and Miss B. Taylor, would be invited to take part in trials for the representative team. Drewitt played very steadily in his match with J. Armstrong. He was content to wait for the high ball, and then hit it extremely hard However, Armstrong does not hit many loose shots, and Drewitt found the task too much for him. In the first game he was level at 10-all, but later he grew too impatient to match Armstrong's very steady play. Chamberlain showed good defence in his match with D. Hill, and showed commendable restraint foi such a young player. The present holder of the provincial under-16 doubles title, he made Hill, the under-18 champion, play near his best.

Miss Taylor, though she did not seriously trouble Mrs J. Shadbolt, played well enough to suggest that she would be in the running for a place in the Canterbury team. The results were (Town names first):—
