Club Paid The Bill (Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 20 The Presidential press secretary • Mr James Hagerty, admitted last night that he had received a free five-day vacation last year at the exclusive Ponte Verda Club near Jacksonville Beach. Mr J. P. LeMaster, president of Ponte Verda Corporation, told the Tampa “Tribune” that the club refused to let Mr Hagerty pay’ the 260 dollar bill. Mr Hagerty and his wife were guests from January 27 to February 1. “When he got here, Mr Hagertv insisted on paying his bill.” Mr LeMaster told the newspaper, “but we would not let him do it.” “No Motive” Mr LeMaster said that there was no motive behind the club’s action. Mr Mayhugh Courson, assistant manager of the Ponte Verda, said that the club never charged its honoured guests Mr Hagerty said: “The account is correct as reported, except for one thing. I did pay for my golf lessons. I personally paid the club pro. “I did insist, as the account says, on paying mv entire bill, but the club would not let me do so. Under the circumstances, there was nothing wrong in this. I do not see how anyone could make anything of my being a guest of the club at their insistence.”

Tug Sinks After Collision

LONDON, June 21. The 135-ton tugboat Lavernock capsized and sank last night in the Bristol channel while assisting the Hurunui (11,276 tons), of the New Zealand Shipping Company, into the Cardiff docks from Avonmouth. One body was picked up by a lifeboat and five survivors were taken to hospital.
