THREE YEARS’ GAOL ' “You are no stranger to prison —not including concurrent sentences you have been sentenced to a total of 11 years eight months imprisonment and if the concurrent sentences were included the e would be an additional 21 years,” said the Magistrate, when he sentenced Gordon Alexander Milne, aged 41, to three years’ imprisonment. Milne, who has 39 previous convictions, mostly for dishonesty, appeared for sentence on three charges—two of theft involving goods of a total value of £96 15s and one of breaking, entering and theft. On each of the two charges of theft Milne was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment, these terms to be served concurrently; and on the breaking and entering and theft charge to two years’ imprisonment—a total of three years. ONE MONTH’S Hector Wetere was convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on a charge of failing to report to a probation officer as required. REMANDED On a charge of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, valued at £385, the property of Hector John McLean, Brian Frederick Harvey (Mr R. B. Shand) was remanded to June 26. CARELESS DRIVING A truck driver was told by the Magistrate that he was as much obliged to keep a careful lookout while reversing his truck across a road and into a gateway as he was when driving on the open highway. Reginald Henry Francis Coles (Mr E. S. Bowie), whose truck was struck by a light car on Halswell road, pleaded not guilty to driving without due cafe and attention. He was convicted, and fined £2. James Colin Buckley, the driver ol the car, was fined £ 1 for having no warrant of fitness. CHARGES DISMISSED A motor-cyclist whose machine struck a taxi as the car was turning right from Colombo street and east into Armagh street, was travelling much too fast, said the Magistrate. He dismissed a charge of failing to give way against William xviaynard Maxwell, a 52-year-old taxi-driver (Mr W. F. Brown), who claimed that he had ample time to make his turn when he moved off. He was only delayed by having to give way to pedestrians who were crossing Armagh street fror north to south. '

A charge, against Roland Andrew Ward, aged 42, a painter (Mr L. G. Holder), of driving a power cycle without due care and attention, was dismissed. TRAFFIC OFFENCES
