WATER SKI-ING CONTROL
No Application To Lyttelton The Motor Launch Regulations. 1958, which have been gazetted to control water ski-ing on harbours and off beaches, do not .apply to the Lyttelton harbour, said the secretary-manager of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr A. L. Burk) yesterday. Intended to ensure better control of water ski-ing and to safeguard the public, the regulations apply to areas over which harbour boards have no jurisdiction. There was no effective control over water ski-ing on the Lyttelton harbour, said Mr Burk. “We had hoped that the regulations would give us that control,’* he said. The regulations would serve as a guide for adoption by harbour boards, should they wish to do so, but the New Zealand Harbours’ Association had asked boards not to take any action in the meantime because the Marine Department had apparently overlooked certain suggestions made by the association. “A recent meeting of harbourmasters , at New Plymouth urged through the association that action should be taken by the Marine Department,’’ Mr Burk said. “Boards are pressing for adoption of their recommendations so that they will have proper control of the sport in their harbours by next summer.”
