PEOPLE IN THE PLAY

Nola Tregoning, captain ol the Canterbury women’s basketball team last year, came out of retirement last Saturday. Playing in a new position as forward for Digbys, she is still a very fit player and proved an asset to the side. ★ Players and spectators at the Canterbury-West Coast match at Greymouth last Monday were full of praise for the manner in which the referee, Mr A. Forrest, controlled the game. Although he remained unobtrusive throughout, he missed no infringement, applied the advantage law fairly, and was always up with the play. He is one of the best referees seen for several years and should prove a worthy successor to that other well-known and very experienced West Coast referee, Mr A. Fong. ★ It seems certain that before his career ends, Harry Cave will be the most successful bowler in New Zealand cricket history. When the match against Somerset ended, he had -brought his tally to -330, and before the English tour ends he could well have advanced that 7' ' ’ total almost to 400. Those ahead of him at present are T. B. Burtt (408), W. E. Merritt (385), and J. Cowie (359). ★ Peter Creighton, the young Palhierston North golfer who competed in the Russley club’s tournament last week-end, may move to Christchurch soon. Creighton played for Mana-watu-Wanganui in last year’s Freyberg Rosebowl tournament. At Russley, Creighton was beaten in the second round of the match play, but when he beat C. J. Ward he played excellent golf, especially about the greens.

The Canterbury representative women’s basketball player, C. Brown, who is not playing tnis season because of an injured ankle, has been appointed a fourth grade selector and coach and manager for the team. ★ P. B. Vincent will return to Christchurch and his position on the teaching staff of Christchurch ' Boys’ High School in mid - July. Vincent was the captain of the 1956 All Black team which played the Springboks and captain of the Canterbury team during its greatest period of success in the Ranfurly Shield series. Vincent has been attending the University of California for the last year and he coached the university’s Rugby team. * ' The honour of succeeding Miss E. Beattie as president of the Canterbury Women’s Hockey Association has gone to Miss Nancy Wagner. Miss Beattie held office for 20 years. President of the University club for two decades, Miss Wagner has followed University teams consistently down the years. A hard worker for the sport, Miss Wagner has previously served on the Canterbury executive committee and has selected and managed Canterbury teams. She will undoubtedly carry on the high standard set by Miss Beattie. The most accurate goalthrowers in the Canterbury women’s basketball competition this season are Judy Dunlop (Kakatai) and Joyce Edwards (West Old Girls). ★ With 112 x points scored from eight tries, 20 conversions, 14 penalty goals and two field goals, S. K. Henderson, the C a n t e r b ury and High School Old Boys’ second five - eighths, was the highest scorer in first-class matches last year, according to the “New Zealand Rugby Almanac.” M. Walters (North Auckland) - with 98 points, was second, and D. B. Clarke (Waikato), with 90, was fourth. As well, Clarke scored 163 points in Australia. ★ Three of the West Coast representatives who played Canterbury last Monday at Greymouth will shortly come to live in Christchurch. T. Egerton, a very solid lock, will come to Christchurch within the next two weeks and will play for Technical. The two others are N. Williams, a centre threequarters, and J. Patrick, a big wing who was the outstanding West Coast back last Monday. It is not yet certain what clubs they will join, but it is possible that one of them will also join Technical.
