Dr. Alfiar Yusuf Helmi, IVHnis-ter-Designate to Ne*w Zealand for the Republic of Indonesia and also his -country’s Ambassador to Australia, will arrive in Wellington on June 17. Dr. Helmi, who was appointed Ambassador to Australia in 1956, is the first representative of his country to be accredited to New Zealand.— (P.A.) -y The death of Sir James Hight, the first chairman of the a first board of managers of the Christchurch Technical College, was marked by a minute’s silence at a meeting of the board last evening. He was chairman of the board between 1907 and 1910. “I worked closely with Sir James Hight and I pay tribute to a man who was a great citizen of Christchurch.” said the Mayor (Mr G. Manning), who is a member of the board. Dr. Trevor Hathcrton, the scientist in charge of New Zealand’s International Geophysical Year expeditions, left Auckland by air yesterday for talks with American authorities on future co-oper-ation between the United States and New Zealand in the Antarctic.— (F.0.0.R.) / Mr I. L. Elliott, who graduated bachelor of agricultural science from Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, in 1935. has been appointed superintendent of the Rukuhia Soil Research Station Hamilton, in succession to Mr R. E. R. Grimmett, who retired earlier this year. Mr Elliott, who was born in England, joined the Department of Agriculture as an instructor in agriculture at Hastings in 1935. and worked in that district and Dannevirke until 1940. Then he was appointed supervisor of fertiliser supplies, a position he held until 1945, when he became assistant superintendent at Rukuhia. j Mr G. H. O. Wilson, of Bulls, has been appointed chairman of the National Historic Places Trust for a term of three years. He replaces Mr C. M. Bowden.
Mr W. G. Waites has 'been appointed a member of the New Zealand Poultry Board for two years from May 10. He represents the Canterbury-Westland Registered Poultrykeepers’ Association, Mr H. Drake, who has retired as assistant traffic manager to the Christchurch Transport Board after 38 years’ service, was entertained at a gathering of the executive staff and inspectors. A oresentation was made on their behalf by Mr J. Paterson. Mr Alexander McDonald, manager of the Geraldine branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed manager of the Matamata branch. Mr T. Jenkison, manager at Wyndham since 1952, will succeed Mr McDonald at Geraldine. Dr. A. M. Chirnside, son of Mr and Mrs E. T. Chirnside, St. Andrew’s Hill. Christchurch, has passed his primary fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons. England. Mr J. Sheeler, at present legal officer in the State Advances office in Nelson, has been appointed public relations officer for Nelson.— (P.A.)
