EXECUTIVE OF CONFERENCE

Mr J. Corrigan Nominated

The Walmate Trotting Club will support the nomination of Mr J. Corrigan for election to the executive of the New Zealand Trotting Conference. Mr Corrigan is the immediate past president of the club. Repeated attempts during the last few years to persuade Mr Corrigan to accept nomination had at last been successful, according to a statement made at a meeting of the club. No club could have a candidate with a greater interest In the sport, said the president (Mr L. W. Davison). Mr Corrigan had time to devote to the position, and was well known in the trotting world. “He has done much to publicise this club, and I am sure his decision to stand will be well received.” Mr Davison said.

Mr Corrigan held office as vicepresident under Mr D. Keyes when the club received its first totallsator permit after a lapse of 25 years. Mr Corrigan’s father, the late Mr M. J. Corrigan, was associated with a group of enthusiasts who established a trotting club which held a non-totallsator meeting on the Waimate racecourse on June 18, 1925. Mr M. J. Corrigan had previously been active in conducting trotting, meetings at Morven. When the Waimate Trotting Club was rejuvenated and granted a permit, Messrs D. Keyes and J. Corrigan played a large part in establishing the club on a firm footing. During Mr Corrigan’s later term as president, the club introduced the New Zealand Golden Slipper Stakes, a classic event for two-year-olds which became firmly established in popularity in a large measure as a result of the efforts of Mr Corrigan at trotting conferences or at meetings of trotting interests.
