ELECTIONS IN COUNTIES
Small Labour Gains In U.K. (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, April 11. Labour was showing small gains today in early returns from county council elections. Twenty of the 62 counties in England and Wales went to the polls yesterday. It was the first day of an eight-day period during which voters will choose their county representatives for the next three years. At 2 a.m. today this was the position: Rutland: No change. Westmorland: No change. Buckinghamshire: Eight Labour gains, seven Conservative losses. Northamptonshire: Net Labour gain of four. Cumberland: Labour lost two seats. Herefordshire: Two Labour gains. Brecon: Three Labour gains. Liberals took a seat from Indenendents. Isle of Wight: One Labour gain. Conservatives won a seat from Independents.
