Pearce (Auckland) to increase the number of national selectors from three to five was unsuccessful at today’s meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union. RANFURLY SHIELD Taranaki Accepts Nine Challenges (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 10. Taranaki, holder of the Ranfurly Shield, has accepted nine shield challenges this season, including one from Golden Bay-Motueka, the latter’s first challenge. S. B. Heather (Waikato) at today’s meeting. He said New Zealand had placed itself on top of the Rugby world by its matches in recent years against South Africa, and Australia, and was now in a rest period before engaging in further important rivalry. “One important aspect of our football has been neglected, even if we are on top of the world." he added. “To put it baldly, we don’t know how to kick a ball in such a way as to know where it will come down. Also we do not have many competent placekickers. Nor are any of our players capable of kicking with either foot. If we can bring our kicking up to standard it will help to stay on top.” N.Z.
