RACING FORM FOR DOUBLE AT RICCARTON

Promise And Sarcelle Prominent Promise and Sarcelle may bring off a good double for three-year-olds in the Sockburn and Waltham Handicaps on the third and final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at Riccarton tomorrow. Promise is on the minimum in the Sockburn Handicap, but with better luck in two of his three races in open company he would have been higher in the weights by now. Bad Luck, in the form of an interrupted run when going well on the inner, cost him a winning chance in the Dominion Handicap last Tuesday, jammed behind the weakening Purser from outside the furlong, he hardly had a race at all. That could be to his advantage in the Sockburn Handicap in which he will be opposing several horses which have had two strenuous races within the last few days.

The Sockburn Handicap field is the strongest of its kind at the meeting. Engaged again are Teaka, Cornflake, and Drum Roll, which were separated by inches in the first three places in the Great Autumn Handicap; also Ark Royal an unlucky fourth in the Great Autumn and a solid finisher for second to Drum Roll in the Dominion Handicap, in which Cornflake was third. Great Sensation, unbeaten in his first two starts in open company, both at Riverton last weekend, has no form background in common with the others, but he won in style in the south. He won over a mile and a half in his last race in hack class and there is good reason to respect his chance in the Sockbum Handicap, though this will be his stiffest test so far. Sarcelle, Keep Time, and Post, the first three in the Great Easter Handicap, will meet again in the Waltham Handicap, the second leg of the double. Sarcelle has gone up 101 b but has only 7-12 in a field that looks weaker in class than the Great Easter. Form for the double is analysed below:— SOCKBURN HANDICAP, Of £l5OO. One mile and a half. •142 ARK ROYAL (17), 9-5, R. J. Skelton. Rather unlucky fourth under 9-3 in Great Autumn Handicap, and Solid finisher for second to Drum Roll in Dominion Handicap. One of best prospects in his present form. tool TEAKA (8), 9-4, A. J. Stokes.— Won Great Autumn Handicap under 8-10. Has physique of weight-carrier, and is running over his best distance. Will be in strong favour unless the track is soft. •800 LIBAN (9), 8-8, W. D. Skelton. —Has not raced within a stone of his best form so far at the meeting. Fourteenth in both the Great Autumn and Dominion Handicaps, <lOO SHOAL (16), 8-B.—Ran past few beaten horses from tail of field for twelfth in Great Autumn Handicap. Not very consistent, but one of her best runs would give her a first-class chance. Won Dunedin Cup three starts back. 8831 DRUM ROLL (5), 8-7.—Won Dominion Handicap with 8-0, and third with 7-9 in the Great Autumn to Teaka (8-10) and Cornflake (7-11). Consistent Wanganui-trained galloper, and should go well again. •000 MOTUEKA (14), 8-5, R. W. Gould. Failed ' in Great Autumn and Dominion Handicaps. Form at this distance does not offer any encouragement. HU GREAT SENSATON (2), 8-5, G. E. Lowry.—Won twice at Riverton in first two starts in open company. Not tested in either race. Will find class tougher here, but should go well if unmarked by his racing and travelling. •023 CORNFLAKE (3), 8-3, D. N. Hadfield. —Ran Teaka to half a head in Great Autumn Handicap, but 3J lengths from winner. Drum Roll, in Dominion Handicap. Runs his races solidly and will be in strong favour if there is no change in track conditions. •002 TAMARISK (15), 7-6. Strong finisher for placing against milers on Tuesday. Sixth in Great Autumn. Could be one of the improvers in this field. 3040 MONEY-GO-ROUND (7). 7-2, N. Eastwood.—Fifth in Great Autumn Handicap, failing to finish as strongly as usual. Will take beating if that race effected any improvement. •800 ROYAL HALYARD (13) 7-2. Well beaten off tenth in Great Autumn Handicap. Sixth in Dominion Handicap. Improvement would be necessary. •200 GOLDWYN (18), 7-1, B. S. Dodds.—Beaten off eleventh in in Dominion Handicap, his first race at the meeting. Will probably find the class too rich again. •000 NEPTUNE’S PRIDE (6), 7-0, A. H. Eastwood.—lmproved few places but beaten off ninth in Dominion Handicap. Finished in same position in the Great Autumn. •000 SOLSTICE (12). 7-0, W. A. Anderton. —Has had luck all against nim in last two races, the latest, the Dominion Handicap, on Tuesday. Should master this distance, and is expected to put the top-weights to the test. 1000 COIN’S EDGE (1), 7-o.—Will find the class too rich unless there is improvement on her latest orm. Bracket: Motueka and Tamarisk WALTHAM HANDICAP, Of £lOOO. Seven furlongs. •001 MULTI (1), 8-6.- -Easy winner over mile at Riverton on Tuesday. Unplaced over 6f on first day at Riverton. Fifth in Dominion Handicap after pacemaking. 1320 CHEYENNE (4), 8-0, W. Hanlin.—Did not run on in Great Easter, weakening to 11th. Disappointing in his final trial before that race. His best form would give him a second-to-none chance. FHIEND (2). 7-13, W. D. Skelton.—Seventh, but not far behind placed horses in Great

Easter. Veteran, but wearing well. Latest win was at Oamaru. 3000 AVENGE (14), 7-13, W. McGregor.—First race since October. May need racing to bring him to his best. 0300 SARCELLE (7), 7-12, N. Eastwood.—Finished strongly from handy position for decisive win in Great Easter Handicap. Rise of 101 b should not place vic-, tory beyond her reach. Does best on firm tracks. 0403 MINDANAO (9), 7-10.—Late run from well back for third in Warstep Stakes on Monday. May take beating if well placed on turn. 0100 RISE AND SHINE (5), 7-9.
