Indoor Bowling For The Blind
The Canterbury Indoor Bowling Centre has started a series of training sessions for members of the Canterbury Blind Institute. Every Saturday afternoon tor the last month members of the centre have supplied mats, bowls and a hall for this purpose and remarkable progress has been made. Originally this movement was started in the North Island, where the blind members were taught the game using an aid similar to a T-square, and soon became extremely proflcient Later the T-square was discarded and vocal aid from the opposite end of the mat became the only aid necessary for a high standard to be maintained. Progress As yet players from the Canterbury Blind Institute have not reached such proficiency as the North Island players, but judging by the progress made in such a short time, it will not be long before the province is represented at the special New Zealand Indoor Bowling championships which are held each year for the blind players. The championships, held last year in Hamilton, attracted a record number of players, and spectators, also in record numbers, were amazed' at the skill shown by the sightless bowlers.
