Dress For Bridegrooms At Easter

Easter brides of 1958 will, by now, have spent much time and thought planning their wedding gowns and their bridesmaids’ frocks. But what of the bridegroom and his attendants? For the large and lavish wedding they will probably appear in morning suits of black tail coat, black pin-striped trousers, grey or lavender waistcoat and grey tie. Some will carry grey toppers. At smaller weddings their dress will be a dark lounge suit, but not navy serge or brown material if they are fashionable. Three leading men’s outfitters in Christchurch were consulted on the correct dress for bridegrooms. They agree that morning suits should only be worn at wedding ceremonies held in daylight. For evening weddings, black tail suits with white waistcoat and white tie or dark lounge suits should be chosen, they said. Dinner Suits Two of the experts said dinner suits should not be worn by the men of the wedding party at a church ceremony. The third said: ’’Why not?”

Before World War 11. New Zealanders had started the practice of wearing dinner suits for late afternoon or early evening weddings, he said. The idea appeals to him because he says it is a sensible and practical custom, even if not within the English tradition. But. he said, a man should not wear a white tie with a dinner suit, not even for his wedding.

Most men would use a dinner suit after their marriage, some would need evening dress for formal wear when they were married, but very few would wear morning suit again, he said Hire For Day

The situation is that men who wear morning suits for their wedding usually hire them for the day. feel ill-at-ease in them and. perhaps, a bit ridiculous, he said. Tire bride, who has probably gone to great expense to look her best on her wedding day, will naturally want her bridegroom to be dressed correctly and to be part of the picture she creates. She may feel that the effect of a beautiful wedding gown may be spoilt if the men in the party will not go to the trouble of wearing morning suits for a few hours.

So whatever the experts say. most likely the bride will decide what the bridegroom wears at their Easter wedding. It is. after all, her privilege and it might be her last chance of telling her husband how to dress.
