SHORT-PRICED DOUBLE

Straight Draw, Crenoble

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY. April 2. The Doncaster-Sydney Cup combination of Grenoble and the New Zealand-bred stayer. Straight Draw, is now the shortest-priced A.J.C. autumn double in history. The Bern-brook-Carbon Copy double, which scored in 1949. was a point longer. Grenoble and Squander Lad are the only two Doncaster acceptors to have serious straight-out support, but the prospect of a wet Easter has induced doubles support for the New Zealand mare Ma Reine.

The Melbourne Cup winner Straight Draw is an even hotter favourite for the Sydney Cup than Grenoble is for the Doncaster. The cup field of 10 is one of the smallest ever. A field of 17, one less than last year, remained in the Doncaster Handicap when acceptances closed today. The New Zealand trainer, A. E. Didham. withdrew one of his candidates, Lochie, but left in Ma Reine, which will be ridden by B. Howlett. Ma Reine drew the outside position at the barrier. The New Zealand horse Jack’s Count was withdrawn this morning. Acceptors are:—
