VEGETABLES BANNED
N.Z. Dinner In New York SAN FRANCISCO, April 1. Cases of New Zealand fruit and vegetables aboard the liner Mariposa have been refused admittance to the United States —and members of the Overseas Press Club in New York might have a sketchier menu because of it. The Californian Department of Agriculture banned the landing from the Mariposa of three cases of passion fruit, six cases of pumpkin, four cases of kumerss, and nine cases of white prAatoes which were to grace the table at the Press Club's New Zealand dinner on April 21. A Matson shipping line spokesman commented: “The cases are not expected to be cleared for entrance unless the United States Department of Agriculture gives special concession.” New Zealand consular officials in New York said it had been determined that the 22 cases had been correctly banned and they did not Intend to seek a special permit.
