NEW CYPRUS VIOLENCE

Seven Bombs And One Murder

(Rec- 10 p.m.) NICOSIA, April 1. A fire in an ordnance camp tonight was the climax to a day of violence on the third anniversary of Eoka—the Cyprus terrorist organisation. Other terrorist outbreaks were seven bomb explosions, strikes, and the first killing in Nicosia’s “murder mile” area for more than a year. The ordnance camp fire occurred near Famagusta, destroying mainly furniture. A large bomb, fitted with a time fuse, was found hidden in an empty whisky case at the N.A.A.F.I. centre in Famagusta.

Gunmen shot dead a Greek Cypriot youth, Christopoulos Engelezos, son of a well-known contractor and industrialist, in Nicosia’s old city. He was shot from behind in a busy street market in broad laylight.

There were seven bomb explosions within 15 hours in the Famagusta area. Three Greek Cypriots were detaine' when a large limpet mine was found on the gangplank of th 3347-ton British ship Grecian in the port of Famagusta. Extra guards were posted on key buildings in Cyprus today and road-blocks were manned on all highways. Everyone entering mblic buildings was searched. Policewomen were on duty to search women.

Attempt to Search Judges At Paphos, West Cyprus, police insisted on searching two Cypriot Judges before allowing them to enter the Court. Only after intervention by the Tritish Commissic ier were the Junges exempted from bodily search. Schools closed and workers went on strike in the mountain districts of south-west Cyprus. The Eoka leader Dighenis (the pen-name of Colone. George Grivas) said in leaflets Issued to mark the anniversary: “We are stronger than ever today—our ranks are increasing daily with fresh blood from the inexhaustible reserves of Greek youth. "With three years fighting experience, we stand face to face with our opponents and declare

. . . this is the time for justice to prevail. “Neither the shameful British and American alliance against us nor British and Turkish coL lusion can bend our movement.”
