ADDINGTON MARKET Lower Prices For Bulls; Good Sale For Fat Lambs

There was a much easier market for boner cattle at Addington market yesterday. Bulls in particular were much cheaper—by £lO to £l5 a head and more in some cases. This was reported to be because buyers were unable to secure early killing space at freezing works. Fat cattle were forward in much smaller numbers and apart from cows, which were cheaper by about £2 for the same reason as the bulls, steers and heifers were only slightly easier. In the store cattle section grown cattle sold at about late rates. Fat lambs met another good sale with a modest advance in values for all classes. Fat wethers were easier but fat ewes met a strong sale and were dearer by up to 3s. Next week on account of the Easter Holidays there will be no sale on Tuesday and all stock will be sold on Wednesday.

FAT LAMBS For the second week in succession | there was a very good sale for fat i lambs, though the entry was again l a sizeable one, totalling 1664, comI pared with 1659 last week. In general, the quality of the offering was fairly good. The West Coast was a, ain well represented in the selection. In contrast with last week, when the sale was dearest at the opening and later tailed off a little, the market yesterday opened quietly and improved as it progressed. Competition was well spread, with both butchers and export buyers taking a close interest. Prime heavy lambs sold particularly well, and this could also be said of prime shorn sorts. There was also a market for plainer lambs, but in this case it was hardly as strong as for the heavier sorts. Nevertheless it was a good sale all round, with the top quality heavy lambs up by about 3s a head and medium and plainer sorts appreciating by Is to 2s. The top price of the day was 84s Id paid for two outstanding lambs from Mrs C. Carter (Greenpark). One of these lambs was a South-down-Border cross and the other a South Suffolk. Six shorn lambs from J. Pennikett (Kokiri) realised 71s Id. Values were:— Extra prime heavy lambs, 65s Id to 74s Id, with an odd sale to 84s Id. Prime butchers’ lambs, 56s Id to 64s Id. For the most part quality was fair. The wether offering, though of only moderate proportions, met a somewhat slack demand, and values were generally easier—in the case of best quality by up to 2s to 3s and even more in the case of medium quality. The market, nevertheless. had a somewhat erratic tendency. Heavy and over-weight wethers were once more rather difficult to dispose of. For all classes of ewes there was a strong demand with the better class appreciating by as much as 3s and other types by almost as much. Wethers made up to 81s Id for 16 from C. 5- Crooks (Methven) and for the tops of 55 C. S. Simpson (Broadfields) received 80s Id. J R Pearce (Methven) also sold seven at 79s Id. and A. M. STORE CATTLE There was a virtual slump in the bull market which has been so buoyant lately. Pressure on killing space at freezing works has temporarily restricted the market, and yesterday buyers dropped their limits by a good £lO to £l5. and in some cases more. Last week there were sales at between £6O and £7O. and one to more than £9O .This week the best sales were made at between £5O and £6O, and only a handful of Bales

were made at more than £4O. The average run of bulls, which were last week selling at £3O to £45 were yesterday in the £2O to £3O range. The best of the bulls yes terday sold at £4O to £55, with an average at £2O to £3O. It was noticeable that quiet bulls, which can be held over by buyers pending an easing in the killing position, were more in demand. This position also affected the market for boner cows, and these were cheaper by about £3 a head. Grown cattle still continued to sell well at about late rates. A feature of the offering was again a consignment of 94 three-year-old Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus-Hereford cross steers from the Bluff station (Kekerangu). These again sold readily at from £3l 3s 6d to £33 18s (id. The following is a range of values for store cattle:— Three to three-and-a-half-year-old steers: £3l 3s 6d to £33 18s 6d. FAT PIGS There was a fairly heavy entry In the porker section, and quality generally was very good. Owing to the holiday season and the consequent short killing time, the market was a lifeless one throughout, with values easier by 5s to 10s a head. Choppers came forward in smaller numbers, but values showed no appreciable change. In the bacon section the yarding was very small, hut owing to the absence of two buyers the market eased bv about 10s a head. Values were:— Light and unfinished porkers, £5 Ils (id to £6 4s 6d. Medium porkers, £6 17s 6d to £7 12s 6d. Heavy porkers, £7 19s 6d to £8 9s 6d. Light baconers, £9 2s 6d to £lO 2s 6d. Medium baconers, £lO 4s 6d to £lO 17s fid. Heavy baconers, £ll 2s 6d to £ll 9s 6d. Choppers, £9 18s 6d to £l7 6s. STORE PIGS In the store pig section the yarding was the largest for some considerable time and quality was very good. There was a medium attendance of buyers, and the sale opened on a much easier tone, this being particularly noticeable in the case of medium and large stores, which w’ere easier by 20s to 25s a head. Weaners, however, were only 3s to 5s cheaper. Three advertised Tamwoith boars made from about £l4 to £32 Values were:— Small weaners, 35s to 425. Best weaners, 45s to 50s. Slips, 52s to 60s. In the fat cattle section, there were only 121 yarded as against 503 last week. Competition was brisk from the outset, and prices could be quoted firm to a shade dearer than last week. The entry in the fat sheep section was 1800 as against 2900 last week. The quality of the yarding was not of a high standard, and prices could be quoted on a par with last week. There was a smaller number of fat lambs entered, but the quality was perhaps better than yarded for some weeks. Prices in this section could be quoted fully firm on last week. An extra prime heavy pen of Romney ewe lambs realised 775. Quotations Fat Cattle.—Extra prime heavy bullocks to £5l 17s 6d, prime heavy £45 12s fid to £5O 2s 6d, medium £37 2s 6d to £42 12s 6d, light from £29 12s fid; prime heavy heifers, to £45 12s fid, prime .£34 7s 6d to £43 7s 6d. medium £2B 17s 6d to £33 2s 6d. light from £26; extra prime heavy cows to £35 2s 6d, prime heavy £2B 7s 6d to £32 17s 6d. medium £23 7s 6d to £26 7s 6d, light from £2O 17s fid.
