MOUNTAINEERING AT EASTER
Club President’s Warning
A warning to mountaineers to exercise care during the Easter holidays was issued yesterday by the president of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, Mr J. F. Hayes. As westerly conditions had been prevailing since before Christmas Mr Hayes said that practically all rivers off the main divide were carrying a large volume of water and all climbers and trampers were urged to exercise every care in fording rivers. It was also suggested that younger climbers should apply all the lessons they had been taught at recent climbing schools. Mr Hayes said that most of the snowfields would be in fairly hard condition and that would mean that extra care would need to be taken in belaying and traverse work.
