ATHLETICS SIX RECORDS BROKEN AT INTER-SCHOOLS’ SPORTS

The belief that better performances would be obtained by holding the inter-secondary schools' annual athletic sports in the first term, at the conclusion of an athletic season, was vindicated by boys competing in the thirty-seventh secondary schools' tournament at Lancaster Park yesterday. Six new records were established and one equalled—the highest number for many years -compared with only three last year. Times in many other events came very close to record performances. More records might have been broken but for the blustery northwest wind which hampered competitors in all track events. In the shorter sprints and hurdles races the boys ran into the wind all the way and in the longer events they received little help from the wind in the back straight because of the protection afforded there by the high embankment. The organisation of the tournament was excellent, the 40 events being run off at the times printed on the programme. Twelve schools competed this year for the first time. The open championship was won this year by St. Bede's College, with 16 points, from Christ’s College with 13j points. The intermediate division was won by Christ s College, with 14 points. Linwood High School and Christchurch Boys’ High School were runners-up with nine points. Linwood High School won its first championship when, with one point to spare, it took the junior title with 10 points. St. Bede’s College was second with nine points. In the 26 finals, Christ’s College gained 17 places. Boys’ High School 14 and St. Bede’s College 13. The most performance was that of Linwood High School, a comparatively young school, which gained five firsts, two seconds and two thirds and was equal second with St. Bede’s in the number of firsts gained. Individual Performances Individually there were some excellent performances. Three of the best were in the sprints In the open 100 yards, A. G. Steel (Boys’ High), pushed very hard over the last few yards by D. W. Mackenzie (Christ’s College), took Isec off the record first set by T. A. Gresson in 1931 and equalled twice since then. The intermediate 100 yards record of 10.6 sec set in 1948, was broken by the strongly-built and very fast Linwood High School runner. A. M. Halliday. At the end of this race Halliday was still increasing the gap to the second plaee-getter. The 36-year-old record for the

junior 100 yards, set up in 1922 by H. Lee and equalled on three other occasions—once by Lee's son—was bettered by V. McGirr (Xavier College) by .Isec. The intermediate high jump did not trouble T. W. Robbins (Boys’ High School) who completed all his earlier jumps with part of his track suit still on. He exceeded the record height of sft slin by Ijin to set a new figure. In the same event in the junior section, J. Baird (Christ’s College) added Jin to the record height. The last record went to another Linwood High School runner, B. Cattermole, who took .Bsec off the junior 880 yards. After equalling the 120 yards open hurdles record of 15.4 sec in a heat, C. C. Kissling (Christ’s College) had the great misfortune to knock over three hurdles in the final and was disqualified after winning the event. A hurdler with an immaculate style. Kissling had no opposition in his heat but found a worthy opponent in the eventual winner of the final, D. Cotter (St. Bede’s), who pressed him hard, especially in the final stages. Had Kissling won this race, Christ’s College would have won the open championship. Feature Event The feature event on the day’s programme, the open mile, had a disappointing outcome. The Christchurch West High School miler D. Clements, who had a best time for this distance this season of 4min 25.7sec—3.7sec better than the inter-secondary school record established in 1932 by C. H. Matthews—was considered to have an excellent chance of lowering the record. Clements led the field throughout the race, completing the first lap in 65.65ec and his second in 70sec. He began the third and fourth laps well clear of the field and his lap times suffered as a consequence. It was not until the last 220 yards that a second runner—J. Power (St. Bede's College)— came up. From the 220 yard mark he began to sprint and was rapidly narrowing the gap in the straight when Clements broke the tape to win by two yards, ,2sec outside the record. The relay races provided some of the most thrilling finishes of the day, although only one title depended upon the outcome of a relay. When the junior relay began, Christ’s College and Linwood High School each had eight points and St. Bede’s College had six points. Faultless baton changing by the St. Bede’s team brought the team first place, but Linwood finished very strongly to take second place—a position which gave the school the championship. In the results the following abbreviations are used:—Christ’s College (CC); Christchurch Boys’ High School (BHS); St. Andrew’s College (St. A); St Bede’s College (St. B); Christchurch Technical College (Tech); Christchurch West High School (West); Papanui High School (Pap); Xavier College (Xav); Linwood High School (Lin).
