APPEAL BY RUSSIA
“In Interest Of Mankind” (Rec. 10 p.m.) MOSCOW, April 1. The Supreme Soviet, appealing to the British Parliament for an end to nuclear weapons tests, said It did so in the interests of all mankind, the official Soviet news agency, Tass. said last night. The appeal noted “with deep regret” that Britain and the United States had not expressed readiness to give an undertaking to end tests by January 1 of this year as proposed by Russia last December. “As a result of every explosion of an atomic or hydrogen bomb the amount of radioactive deposits which have a harmful effect upon the health of people now living, and on posterity, increases on the surface of the earth.” said the Russian appeal Declaring that the Soviet decision to stop tests unilaterally had been guided by the desire to make a practical beginning to the general stopping of such tests, the appeal said: 'ln the interests of all mankind, the USSR Supreme Soviet urges the Parliament of Great Britain to support this initiative which responds to the hopes and desires of millions and millions of people in all countries. “The Supreme Soviet is also appealing on the same subject to the United States Congress and the parliaments of other countries."
