P.A.Y.E. Deductions At A Glance
The P.A.Y.E. system of taxation will come into operation from today, when deductions covering both income tax and social security charge will be made from salary or wages each week, or according to the duration of the pay period. The following table, which gives representative examples of weekly deductions for single and married taxpayers with up to four dependants, incorporates the basic exemptions. Separate tables, covering special circumstances of individuals, such as seasonal workers and those who hold more than one job, have also been issued, and vary from the rates shown below. These figures include both income tax and social security charge deductions. Thus a single taxpayer earning £l5 a week will have £1 18s 4d deducted in one sum in what previously would have been a weekly deduction of £1 2s 6d for social security charge, plus a.lump sum in income tax in February.
