MAYFIELD SHOW ATTRACTS RECORD ENTRIES

Record entries, a good attendance and perfect show weather made the Mayfield Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s thirty-third annual show in the Mayfield Domain on Saturday one of the most successful for many years. Nearly 2000 persons attended the show, and the gate takings were more than £2O up on last year, in spite of a lower admission price.

The entries totalled more than 3000, and there were considerable increases in the sheep and cattle classes. Horse entries were about the same, but exhibits by school children were in greater number than ever before. Membership of the association has also increased to 360.

Trade exhibits filled the five acres at the eastern end of the ground, and a full range of farm equipment and machinery was on view. Worthy of special mention was the farm safety display organised by the Mayfield Young Farmers’ Club. Dummies and farm implements were used to good effect.

Built as part of the general show improvement plan by voluntary labour, the sheep pens have been almost half completed in permanent materials with concrete posts and steel fences and gates. These attracted much favourable comment from visitors. Other improvements have been the topping of trees and a general tidying of the grounds.

The grand parade was led by the Ashburton Silver Band, and the first of the long row of champions was the thoroughbred entire Ace High, owned and shown by Miss Mary Rhodes. The leader of the cattle section was W. Ingles Jun.’s champion Jersey bull. The horse section was led by the champion hack Phar-Leigh, ridden by Miss Nola Tate, and the ponies by Miss Juliet Cunningham’s champion pony, Poppy, ridden by Miss Neroli Morton.

The president of the association (Mr W. G. Ellery) said that the weather had been particularly kind and although clouds had begun to close over at times, the day had remained fine for one of tht most successful shows held at Mayfield. Exhibitors, judges, officials and the public had all contributed to the success of the day.

Introduced by Mr Ellery at the conclusion of the grand parade, Mr R. G. Gerard, M.P., said the district had continually improved its farms and amenities, and this could be seen when the district’s efforts were displayed at the annual show. “Looking at the district in general and the wonderful display of fine stock at this show, I don’t think if there is a recession we need worry very much,” he said. The grand parade was followed by the finals of the dog trial events held in the ring, and the show concluded with the open F.E.I. jump. Judges’ Comments The Border Leicester sheep were of a high standard, and the champions were up to metropolitan show level, said the judge (Mr R. S. Gunn, of Darfield). Some of the entries had wool which was slightly weak and not up to Border Leicester standards, but the sheep were all in good show condition. “It hasn’t been a good year for show sheep, but these have done well. The breed has improved greatly since I was last at the Mayfield show several years ago,” he said.

The judge of the Corriedales (Miss E. Spence, Central Otago) said the section was of a very high standard, and the sheep were fine, typical Corriedales. They handled well and were well brought out. The champion ewe, shown by D. J. Johnston (Mayfield) was a fine animal with nice handling wool. In the natural classes, the ram and ewe hoggets were most promising, she said.

Both the judges in the Romney section Were from the North Island and were impressed by the standard of the / sheep shown. Mr G. A. Allan, of Masterton, who judged the rams, said that the section was, in general, up to any comparable standard in New Zealand, and exhibitors were to be given credit for the wonderful order in which the rams were presented.

The champion ram, shown by R. W. Oakley, was an excellent sheep with a good even fleece and carcase. It stood well and was a good mover. The reserve champion ram, also exhibited by Mr Oakley, was a young ram and showed great promise. In spite of the unseasonable year, the natural condition classes had been in very good order. The Romney ewes were very good, said Mr E. Ellis, of Masterton. The top sheep, especially in the twotooth and older ewes classes, were in fine show condition, and compared favourably with any he had seen at North Island shows. They were well woolled and had excellent heads. The champion and reserve champion ewes were very fine and could compare with most Romney champions.

The judge of the Ryeland section, Mr Lucas Watson, of Ealing, said it was encouraging to see such wellsupported classes of good typical Ryelands. Some of the sheep were out of condition in the wool, but because of the weather it was no fault of the owners. The classes were well shown and brought out in fine show condition. The champion ram, shown by G. H. Burrows, was a fine example of the breed. Fine and medium combing classes in the Merino section were slightly better than the strong combings, said Miss Lucy B. Wills, of Snowden, who judged the section. Both champions had been fine or medium combing, and would do well in any show, metropolitan or country, she said.

The Dorset Horn section was again all from the one breeder. T. P. Lowe, but although there were fewer entries, the standard of the sheep was high, said Mr Ivan Oakley, of Mayfield, after judging the section. The champion ewe was very typical of the breed, and had an excellent carcase.

Entries were in good number, and the quality of the South Suffolk section was well above the average show standard, said the judge (Mr H. C. B. Withell, of Ealing). Both the champion ram and ewe exhibited by G. S. Campbell were typical of the breed. They handled well and had good mutton qualities. The prize-winning ram and ewe hoggets were especially worthy of mention and showed considerable promise, he said.

The judge oi the Southdown classes, Mr C. A. Adams, of Greendale. said the section was well supported, with some particularly nice sheep being shown The lambs appeared to be slightly backward, probably because of the unfavourable season, but the ewe classes were w’ell up to any show standard. The champion ewe. exhibited by G. H. Burrows, was exceptionally good. It was well brought out and handled well, and was possibly the best sheep in the show. The champion ram was a credit to its owner, W J. Early, but was beginning to show its age.
