North Canterbury Competitions

Neither Kaiapoi nor Rangiora couM force a win when the North Canterbury cricket competitions concluded on Saturday, and so both teams share the Senior A Cup. By beating a weakened Rangiora High School team outright, Swannanoa took the lead from Oxford in the Senior B grade. Kaiapoi did not recover from a bad start when it lost three wickets in the first over against Amberley Forced to bat slowly, Kaiapoi was not in a position to declare until all hope of victory was lost. The Rangiora bowlers were unable to break through the Ohoka batting. Although given a little under two hours to make 212 runs. Rangiora could not get going against the steady Ohoka attack. Loburn gave an improved performance against Woodond to finish with a creditable draw.

The fast left-hand Oxford bowler, P. O’Malley, routed the Carleton batsmen, but Carleton fought back, and the Oxford batsmen had to struggle before the 61 runs required for victory were obtained Good individual batting performances were:—E. Blakely 138 against Rangiora, and 101 by J. Criglington against Woodend: P. O’Malley with seven for 22 for Oxford against Carleton; O. Ellesmere Matches

Leeston enhanced its chances oi winning the Ellesmere Sub-associa-tion’s competition tor the T. V. Bailey Memorial Cup when in the thirteenth round it beat Lincoln College by an innings and 10 runs on Saturday. Leeston owed much to some excellent bowling by M. Chamberlain. who took seven wickets for 36 runs for the match, B. Free, who took seven for 17 in the first innings, and J. Chamberlain, who took six for 14 in the second innings. In the match between Dunsandel and Southbridge J. Walker scored his third century for Dunsandel this season. He retired at 125.
