Earthquake Proof

A new earthquake-proof brick building process, pioneered in New Zealand by the Pottery and Ceramics Research Association, is being used for a new store in Taita, Lower Hutt. Known as reinforced brickworks, the new technique does away with the need for concrete panels or steel framework for* brick buildings. Instead, the walls are constructed of two skins of bricks laid on edge, with a three inch cavity in the centre. Into this cavity is poured a very wet friixture of cement, sand and pea gravel, into which reinforcing steel is inserted as the wall, only eight or nine inches thick, is built up.
