RACING AND TROTTING

“Not Seriously Affected”

Racing and trotting would not be seriously affected by a ban on mid-week fixtures, in the opinion of the president of the New- Zealand Racing Conference (Mr G. H. Grigg) and the secretary of the New Zealand Trotting Conference (Mr W. H. Larcombe).

“Mid-week racing dates, apart from holidays and anniversary days, are few and far between,” said Mr Grigg. “If mid-week racing is abolished, there could be minor difficulties in finding suitable dates which do not clash. However, racing in New Zealand is already under the control of the Government, and I personally would rather leave the matter in the meantime.”

Mr Walsh’s suggestions, if adopted by the Government, would have little effect on trotting, said Mr Larcpmbe. At present only postponed meetings and meetings in country districts where access was difficult were held on week days. In Christchurch there was a special dispensation for the Grand National and Cup meetings. The secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club (Mr F. T. H. Bell) had no comment to make. “I think it is a national matter,” he said.
