STRIKES IN JAPAN

Strikers Clash With Police (Rec. 11.45 p.m.) TOKYO, March 21. Extra police were called on duty throughout Japan today to prevent any repetition of yesterday’s bloody clashes between striking workers and police. Police reports said 18 policemen and 51 workers had been seriously injured throughout Japan when trade union members striking for higher wages clashed with police squads. Eight workers were arrested.

At dawn today it was estimated that more than 150,000 workers were either on strike or taking part in workshop rallies. Millions of Japanese attempting to leave cities for the countryside to enjoy today’s national holiday celebrating' the spring equinox were stranded when private .railway workers began a 24hour strike. >
