A. E. Matthews Wins A Battle

(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, March 19. A. E. Matthews, the 88-year-old actor, has almost won his fight against the local council over a lamp-post.

Civic leaders have had second thoughts about putting the standard outside “Matty’s” 300-year-old cottage. They are now considering erecting it on the other side of the road—providing he pays £3O to meet the cost of removing it. “I don’t mind paying,” “Matty” said. '-

Ten days ago he refused to allow workmen to erect the lamppost, which he described as “a monstrosity.” He put a chair over the hole they had dug and sat on it as a protest. With peace in sight, “Matty” said: “Of course, it was fun while it lasted.”
