ELECTION FOR MAYOR A

Mr Manning For Labour

Mr G. Manning, the DeputyMayor of Christchurch, will be the Labour Party’s candidate for the mayoral by-election on May 17.

Nominations for the mayoralty, vacancies on the City Council, and for the triennial elections of the Christchurch Drainage and Transport Boards closed with the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee yesterday. Although no names were announced, and candidates will not be made known until after a committee meeting next week, only one nomination for the mayoralty was received. That the name was Mr

-Manning’s is undoubted. A ballot will be necessary to decide the party’s candidates for vacancies on the City Council. It is not yet clear how many seats will be vacant. Mr Manning’s selection will mean that he will have to resign from the council. If, as is expected, Mr W. P. Glue is chosen as the Citizens’ Association candidate, he will also resign from the council. The vacancies they create will be additional to those resulting from the resignations of two Cabinet Ministers, Mr J. Mathison and Miss M. B. Howard. The Mayoral by-elec-tion is necessary because of the resignation of Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., who is now Speaker of the House of Representatives. It is understood that there are sufficient nominations for the Labour Party to contest all six seats on the Christchurch Transport Board which are filled from city electors. It is likely that the party will not put up candidates for all the 14 districts of the Christchurch Drainage Board, but will probably have candidates for all the districts which were contested at the election three years ago. Then, neither the Labour Party nor the Citizens’ Association contested several seats in districts which in previous elections had shown a clear preference for one party.
