BUTTER PRICE IN BRITAIN

N.Z. Product “Not Unduly Low” (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 30. With 500,000 unemployed in Britain the present price there of New Zealand butter was not unduly low, said Sir William Goodfellow, managing-director of Amalgamated Dairies, today. He advised farmers not to expect too much from the British market even if a dumping duty were imposed. European countries had always sent their butter surplus to the United Kingdom, and Australia was one of the worst offenders in selling butter for export below local prices. A dumping duty imposed by the United Kingdom would cause much damage to her own exports, and there would be no reduction in the volume of imported butter. “For instance,’’ said Sir William Goodfellow, “if Finnish butter is excluded from Britain it would probably go to Germany, and Germany would buy less Danish. Then, more Danish butter would arrive in Britain. “The fact is that New Zealand butter has to sell in competition with excellent margarine selling at Is 9d per lb throughout the United Kingdom.”
