HEADQUARTERS SOUGHT N.Z. Council Of Women

The National Council of Women of New Zealand was looking for a property in Wellington to be used as the Dominion f headquarters and meeting place for the executive, the Dominion president (Mrs T. H. Cumberbeach) told a meeting of the Christchurch branch last evening.

“In the interests of the efficient administration of the society which now has 30 branches, I think we should purchase a property as soon as possible. At present the administration is scattered around in a number of houses and Dominion executive meetings have to be held in a church hall or similar place. If we have a meeting room in Wellington we will be able to let it and it will bring in revenue for the council.” said Mrs Cumberbeach. Mrs Cumber beach said that she had seen the plans for the new women’s hospital in Auckland. “I’m afraid rooming-in is coming and all I can say is that I’m glad that I had my babies before its introduction. The policy is to get the mothers out of bed as soon as possible after they have had their babies.”

Criticism of the large number of remits which were forwarded tor the annual conference, making it unwieldy, was made by the Dominion secretary (Mrs D. S. Kemshed). For the previous conference held in Auckland 62 remits had been received whereas the British council had confined the discussion to 12 good remits at its conference.

The following resolution was passed: “The Christchurch branch records its great disappointment that the Dominion executive’s request that opportunity should be given to the National Council of Women of New Zealand to entertain the Queen Mother was not granted. It is requested that the matter be reopened with the Internal Affairs Department in regard to future tours. The branch feels that the matter concerns not only Royalty but also all women of note whom New Zealand women are entitled to meet.”
