1250gns Paid For Colt By Stormyway

Tap price of 1250gns was paid for a Stormyway-Admira-tion colt at the fourteenth annual New Zealand national sales of standard-bred yearlings held at the Addington Show Grounds yesterday. This colt, offered on behalf of Mr G. Aitchison, of Oamaru, was purchased by H. Matson and Company, as agents for an Australian buyer.

The colt, one of the first crop of his sire, was an outstanding individual. Admiration, a member of the same family as Lookaway, is also the dam of Esteem. Adoration, Achates, Zany <N.Z. Oaks) and other winners. He was brought forward in splendid condition.

The only other lot to realise more than lOOOgns was a halfbrother by Flying Song to Guiseppe, Diamond Hanover and the promising two-year-old, Damien. Offered on behalf of Mesdames D. T. McCormick and ,E. G. O. Rutherford, of Christchurch, he was sold for 1150gns to the Sydney trainer, W. Picken, Mr K. Langford, of Christchurch acting as agent. The colt was originally knocked down at IZOOgns. but this bid was disputed and he finally went to Mr Langford at HSOgns. A hard bay colt with three white feet l»e was one of the first crop »f his'sire. : - Apart from these two colts, both of which were from .mares which had left good winner,, the demand throughout the'day was very quiet and breeder, had to drop their reserves in,most instances to meet a buyers’ market. The next best price was 750gns for a fine black colt by Stormyway from Dusky Logan, offered on behalf of Mrs E. C. Connelly, of Geraldine. This was the figure Mr G. Lee. of Sydney, had to go to to secure this close relation to Dilworth. Fillies Not Sought There was hardly any Inquiry for fillies, except those from exceptionally good winning families. Top price in this section was 525gns paid by Mr L. M. Orr, of Gore, as agent, for a black filly by Light Brigade from Maud Grattan offered on behalf of Messrs J. Moore and J. Thompson, of Christchurch. The Templeton trainer, D. G. Jones, as agent, paid 480gns for a filly by Light Brigade from Rendezvous, the dam of Dismiss, and this was second top price for a filly. She was offered on behalf on Roydon Lodge Stud, Ltd., Yaldhurst, who refused 650gns for a black colt by Light Brigade from Virginia Song. The sale was very quiet early, but brightened later in the morning and again early in the afternoon. Then there was a general easing and passings again became frequent, 40 lots failing to reach the reserve throughout the day. Altogether 60 lots were sold for 17,200gn5. an average price of slightly more than 286jgns. compared with last year’s record average of 365igns. This year s figure was the same as for 1956.

when 54 lots were sold. Australian buyers took 11 lots at 5895gns, an average price of 536gns. The main Australian buyer was Mr Lee. who paid 1650gns for three lots.

Of the 60 lots sold two realised over lOOOgns, one 750gns, four between 500gns and 600gns, five between 400gns and 490gns, 10 between 300gns and 390gns, 19 between 200gns and *29ogns, 11 between lOOgns and 190gns. and eight less than lOOgns. There were also six lots for which no bid was received.

The majority of the yearlings were brought forward in better condition than in recent years, but once again the progeny of colonial-bred sires met little inquiry. The sales were conducted by H. Matson and Company in conjunction with Wright, Stephenson and Company, Ltd. The auctioneers were Mr D. Matson and Mr W. Patterson.
