WIN FOR NORTH CANTERBURY Sub-Associations’ Shield Match

Requiring 152 runs in 110 minutes to win, North Canterbury gave a sparkling display of batting to win the Sub-Associations’ Shield with the last ball of the match at Sheffield yesterday. On the second day of its match against Malvern, North Canterbury began its second innings with a seemingly-impossible task ahead of it. Vigorously the batsmen scored runs—including 14 in the last over —to win by three wickets. Malvern, which had scored the respectable total of 336 on the first day, gave North Canterbury a sporting chance by declaring its second innings at two wickets down for 182. T. McGowan had batted solidly for 94 before being bowled by J. Blakeley, and G. T. Wright was not out 80. North Canterbury had scored 366 in its first innings—including a fine century by J. Capstick—and was faced with scoring 152 runs in lightning fashion to win. The challenge was accepted, and although P. Robertshaw, Capstick, M. Logan arid D. Quigley were all dismissed cheaply, vigorous strokes from the other batsmen saved the day B. Cobden hit the last ball of the day for a four to exceed the required total by 2 runs. Scores:— MALVERN
