REFUNDS OF TAXES

Payment Expected Next Month

About 10,000 taxpayers in the Christchurch district of the Inland Revenue Department are due to receive refunds of income tax they have paid, but they are unlikely to receive them until the middle of next month.

Their refunds will vary from a few shillings to large amounts. Most will get refunds on taxes they paid before the Government changed at the General Election. Some paid their tax assessed although Ministers of the new Government had said they would receive a rebate of up to £lOO Mr N. A. Rowntree, district superintendent of the department, said yesterday that there had been a number of requests for refunds. Other taxpayers who had not asked for refunds would have to receive them, because from April 1 the new system of P.A.Y.E. would be introduced. There was no question of withholding refunds, he said, but there was a considerable amount of work to be done on checking the refunds owing, and most of the staff of the department was at present working full-time in preparation for the new system of taxation.

Normally there was a carryover of credits for some taxpayers, he said, but this year, with the new system, accounts

were balanced at the end of March in readiness for P.A.Y.E from April 1, so that even if only a few shillings were owing they had to be refunded. No instruction had been issued, he said, but it would probably be about the middle of April before refunds could be made.
