TRAFFIC CONTROL NEAR SCHOOLS

Children’s Safety “Real Problem”

(New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, March 20.

The safe passage of children to and from school was a “real problem.” said Mr R S. France (South Canterbury) at the annual conference of the Dominion Federation of School Committees’ Associations in Timaru today. Mr France said a single care-lessly-driven vehicle was as dangerous to children as a heavy volume of traffic on a busy highway. Children were well controlled when leaving school for the luncheon break, but there was no control over them on their return.

He proposed a remit “That where practicable the word ‘school’ be written on the roads approaching all schools, and ‘school’ signs erected as well, and that school pedestrian crossings be installed in city areas to the satisfaction of the school committee concerned, irrespective of the volume of traffic.” The remit was carried. An Otago remit, which dealt with school pedestrian crossings, was also carried. It was suggested that crossings of a distinctive type be effective only when operated by a school patrol.
