Life In Hollow Elm Tree
(N.Z. Press Association— Copyright! LONDON, March 19.
A woman and her husband are living in the hollow trunk of an old elm tree at Pershore, Worcestershire, it was stated yesterday, according to the “Daily Sketch.”
The tree is at Allesborougb Farm, which belongs to Mr Tom Bomford.
He said last night, according to the “Daily Sketch”: "The couple have been living there for about six weeks. Some years ago the tree was set on fire, and the trunk is hollow from top to bottom. Inside it has been lined with sacking on the floor. The door is a hole in the trunk, covered by sacks.” The interior of the tree is about five feet in diameter. There are a few pots and pans in which the couple do their cooking. The woman, Doris May Parkes, aged 37, was charged at the Worcester Magistrate's Court yesterday with stealing a pair of boots Chief-Inspector Joseph Davidson said: “I have no objection to bail providing there is suitable surety. The prisoner is of no fixed address and is. I believe, residing in a tree trunk.” Bail was refused because Mrs Parkes could not produce a suitable sum.
Asked if she had any objection to a remand, she replied: “I want to go home.”
