SUMMIT TALKS SITE

Geneva Said To Be Likely

(Rec. 8 p.m.l WASHINGTON, March 19. The United States Government

is preparing for a possible summit conference in Geneva in September preceded by a foreign minsters’ conference in June, a Reuter correspondent reported today.

He quoted authoritative sources as saying the preparations were contingent on a prior indication from the Soviet Union that real progress could be made at the summit on one or more of the great world problems. This, in turn, would mean some change in the Soviet conditions for a Foreign Ministers' meeting, be said. It had insisted up to now that the Ministers' role would be limited merely to listing an agenda for the summit and the composition of such a conference.

The United States, on the other hand, would want a thorough discussion of cold war issues with a view to determining what chance there was of making progress on them at the summit The Reuter correspondent said that while the United States Government had not-ruled out Washington as a possible summit conference venue, the authoritative

sources had said that Geneva was the No. 1 choice if for no other reason than that it has adequate facilities. It had. been reported earlier

that the Eisenhower Administration had decided against a summit conference in the United States. Unofficial reports had mentioned Geneva and Stockholm as possible sites.
