New Move In Cuba

(Rec. 11 p.m.) HAVANA, March 20.

President Fulgencio Batista of Cuba, had made an Army commander head of the National police in another move aimed at curbing rebellion, the American Associated Press reported. President Batista appointed Brigadier-General Pilar Garcia, the Army chief of Matan x Province, to succeed Police Brigadier Hernando Hernandez, who was assigned to the Armed Services Joint Command, the news agency said.

Taking over control of the 7700man force, General Garcia said: “I have come to maintain order.” He smashed a rebel attack on the Matanzas Garrison in 1955. The American Associated Press said that as General Garcia took over the police job, rebel guerrillas launched new attacks in Oriente Province and Havana nad a series of power blackouts, varying from 20 minutes to an hour.

Electric power companies blamed a transmission failure. ■Other sources said rebel sabotage was the cause.
