Mental Hospitals
Sir.—The need for preventive psychiatry is more urgent than ever. It is a cheap price to pay for full mental health—the one chance, for many. Only those who have been successfully treated by psychotherapy can fully appreciate the importance and truth of this statement. By repudiating this age-old theory, the people are allowing this country to institute places of abode, that are litle more than concentration camps. It is time they faced realities, admitting personal responsibilities, and shouldering them with moral strength and courage. I suggest they enlighten themselves by reading “A Man Against Insanity,” by Paul de Kruif, the story of a doctor who learned from personal experience what it means to be psychotic. And no less important, ‘‘The Sources of Love and Fear,” by Dr. M. Bevan-Brown, the one book I wish I had read 10 years earlier. What untold suffering it would have saved.—Yours, etc., BOUNDLESSLY GRATEFUL. March, 19, 1958.
