Tourist Hotels

Sir. —The implications of “Speedbird’s” suggestion that a

first-class hotel should be built here will, no doubt, be duly appreciated by the proprietors of existing establishments. But why so much emphasis on the tourist element? There must be quite a few New Zealanders who would like now and then to take advantage of the amenities provided by a really up-to-date hotel; especially when, owing to geographical factors, the average inhabitant is restricted to the facilities available in his native land, delightful as that may be, for an occasional excursion into the realms of luxurious living. But one thing seems certain; no hotel can aspire to be a fitting resort for the discriminating guest, tourist or indigenous, unless the public bar is put where it belongs —out of sight and hearing of the residential quarters.—Yours, etc., _z' M.T. March 19, 1958.

Sir, —Y our correspondent, “Speedbird,” provides Cr. Guthrey with a good case to advance to overseas air line companies, when it is suggested that a new tourist hotel be built by local or overseas interests in Christchurch to cater for the expected flow of tourists to the South Island when large jet aircraft commence to fly into Christchurch International Airport in the early 1960’5. It is very convenient to have a first-class airport within easy reach of the city, but we must also have first-rate accommodation to offer. Accommodation ceases to exist at Easter and Show Week or when wool sales or national conventions are held in the city. A tourist hotel must be given priority, preferably under private enterprise, and most definitely not under Government or brewery interests.— Yours, etc., HOTELIER. March 18, 1958.
