NELSON RAIL LINK
Two Possibilities Outlined
(From Our Own Reporter) NELSON, March 19.
To give Nelson a trunk rail connexion with the rest of the South Island the choice of routes has been narrowed down to two, according to a report to the Minister of Works (Mr Watt) from the Commissioner of Works (Mr F. M. Hanson). A copy of this report has been received by Mr S. A. Whitehead, Member of Parliament for Nelson.
The report states that the shorter route would run from Nelson to Wakapuaka. from there to Havelock via Tinlins and Pelorus valleys then from Havelock via the Kaituna river to Blenheim. The distance would be about 58 miles, including a tunnel of four miles. The second route would run from Brightwater via the Wairoa river and Pass creek, tunnelling through the divide with a tunnel up to three miles and a half long and down the Goulter river to the Wairau valley some 40 miles upstream from Blenheim. The length of this route would be 75 miles.
The report summarised the course of work yet to be done on the surveys and indicated that the work on the first route would be completed much sooner than on the second.
