Washington As “Clean City”
Washington is one of the cleanest cities in the world, according to Mr G. R. Lascelles, who recently returned from a tour for a year to the United States, Europe and Asia. He described iMew York as “one of the briskest cities in the world,” when he addressed the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association Tin Hat Club in the Jellicoe Hall.
Mr Lascelles said that Jugoslavia was the only country behind the Iron Curtain where an American or English newspaper could be bought Freedom of speech was not allowed, he said, and most of the countries behind the Iron Curtain appeared drab. “Songs Of Th© Nile.”—The Institute of Oriental Languages of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences has issued a book entitled “Songs of the Nile” which contains the most beautiful poems of ancient Egyptian lyrics. The book is supplemented with colour lithographs.—Prague. ’
