Huge Collection Of Jewellery (Rec. 10 p.m.) BUENOS AIRES, March 19 Remnants of the fabulous jewellery and gold collection of the former President of Argentina, Juan Peron. will be auctioned at the Municipal Bank—known as the country’s official pawnshop—next Tuesday. The former President’s collection of ivory pieces, diamonds, precious stones, gold and platinum was valued at about £1.000.000. A 10-day sale last December brought about £lO.OOO.
Amnng some of the many necklaces belonging to the former president’s wife. Evita Peron, was one weighing 130 carats and made of huge diamonds and platinum There were nearly 30 large diamonds in one bracelet.
Among the other treasures amassed by Peron were a huge clock in gold and crystal gold goblets by the dozen, and Chinese gold-studded music boxes.
The amount of gold in the former President’s collection might be explained by the fact that when callers at the Presidential Palace asked for a favour they were often told by Presidential aides: “The President will grant vour request. But of course he likes gold.” Officially described as oddments. the collection included such items as religious statuettes, medieval paintings, ikons, a solid silver table service, Indian silk and oriental carpets.
