Resentment At Criticism

A French member of Parliament, angered by criticism of France’s Algerian policy in the House of Commons, today put down questions on Cyprus, the Mau Mau and Britain’s use of the cat-o-nine-tails. v
Mr Michel Jacquet, a Conservative deputy in the French National Assembly, asked the Defence Minister, Mr Jacques Chaban-Delmas:
(1) How many British officers and men had been punished for acts of maltreatment in Cyprus? (2) How many Mau Mau “were massacred during the rebellion in Kenya?” and (3) If the Defence Minister could give details of British use of the cat-o-nine-tails for the punishment of civilians?
