“JUNGLE GYMS”

Surgeon’s Report On Hazards (New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, March 18.

The Hawke's Bay Hospital Board will refer to the Education Department and the Hawke’s Bay Education Board a report by a Napier orthopaedic surgeon, Mr G. J. Taine, dealing with the number of schoolchildren injured in falls from “jungle gyms” and other gymnastic equipment in school playgrounds. In his report Mr Taine said that an average of two or three fresh fractures occurred each week thoughout the year, and in one week recently seven new cases were treated in Hastings and five in Napier. Mr Taine said almost all of the fractures occurred in the upper limbs and a considerable number in the elbow region—“a further disturbing feature, as fractures in this region offer serious problems.’’

The Hospital Board will ask the education authorities whether gymnastic apparatus can be made safer.
