The New Zealand three-year-old, Tobacco Road, got a foot over a hopple just as the starter released the barrier for the final of the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Harold Park, Sydney, last Saturday night, said his trainer-driver, M. Holmes, yesterday. Tobacco Road was not at his best when beaten in his qualify ing heat for the race, but he improved a lot in the week leading up to the final, and Holmes felt he would have paced a fine race. Tobacco Road has been left in Sydney in the care of J. Dalgety who is attached to Holmes’s stables. His main mission will be the £4OOO New South Wales Pacers’ Derby, the heats of which will be run on April 24, with the final on May 3. Tobacco Road rpay have a run kt a country meeting or a gymkhana leading up to the heats, in which he will be driven by Holmes. Saturday’s race was won by the Victorian colt, Heroic Action, which had finished fourth in his qualifying heat Heroic Action is a chestnut colt by Daring Deed from Flurry and he is trained by G. Gath. Daring Deed, which was at one stage trained at Yaldhurst by Holmes, was bred at Parnassus by Messrs E. and G. Rutherford. He was by Light Brigade from Millie de Oro, by Rey de Oro, tracing back to Millie C. Millie de Oro was also the dam of Connenora, Busted Flush and Dinghy. Thunder is closely related to Daring Deed.
