ESCAPE FROM BORSTAL

Youths Surrender To Girl

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, March 18.

An extensive search for two youths who escaped from the Invercargill Borstal institution on Sunday night ended just after 7 p.m. today, when the youths gave themselves up to a girl aged 16. Jessie Calder, at the front gate of her home at 431 North road. They told her they were Borstal boys who had escaped. “I didn’t believe them, of course, but when they said they wanted to give themselves up I told them to come inside. My mother didn’t believe them at first, but after she realised who they were she rang the Borstal authorities, and they came out in a car and got them,” said Jessie tonight. “I often take the warders and policemen a cup of tea when they are looking for other escapers, but I never thought I would be giving one to the boys themselves,” she said. The youths, Lindsay Earl McGregor, aged 17, and Robert William McClennan, aged 18, are believed to have been hiding in bush near the Ca’der home during their two days of liberty. They had nothing to eat but blackberries.
