Ponding Areas
Sir, —In view of the large-scale flooding of rivers in New Zealand and threats from our local giant, the Waimakariri, might these questions be answered, please: What, if any, natural ponding areas are intentionally left near rivers which have flooded after costly protection work has been undertaken? Were Waikato swamp areas drained or planted with watergrass? Did natural swamp land cease to be efficient after denudation and erosion aggravation at head waters?—Yours, etc., PENNY WISE. March 1, 1958.
