ODDFELLOWS’ LODGE
North Canterbury District An important part in the early history of Kaiapoi had been played by the Loyal Kaiapoi Lodge and the North Canterbury District of the Manchester Unity. Independent Order of Oddfellows, said the Mayor (Mr C. T. Williams) when welcoming delegates to the ninety-fifth annual district conference at Kaiapoi on Saturday. Mr Williams, son of a former Mayor, Mr C. Morgan Williams, praised the district and lodge for their work in the com-
munity life of the borough and declared the conference open. The District Grand Master (Mr W. C. Harris) congratulated the lodge on its attaining its centenary this year. The presentation of the J. T. Houghton membership award was made to Mr E. W. Stapleton, past grand master of the Loyal City of Christchurch Lodge, who had introduced the greatest number of new members during 1957. Officers elected for the coming year were: district grand master, Mr W. Hughes; district deputygrand master, Mr A. T. Hill; district secretary, Mr H. R. Peers; district treasurer, Mr M. J. Paulger; immediate past district grand master, Mr W. C. Harris; district management cbmmittee, Messrs J. T. Houghton, C. M. A. Thompson; past district grand masters, Messrs J. x G. Cardwell, R. H. Herron, A. G. Ward, E. N. Price, past grand masters.
