THEFT OF SUGAR AT DUNEDIN
Two Men Gaoled For 12 Months
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 14.
Two men convicted of stealing 266 bags of sugar from a Dunedin wholesale compahy were today sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment by Mr Justice Henry in the Supreme" Court. The two men were Thomas Hall, aged 45, a storeman and Smith Bryce Gerrie, .aged 43. a pastrycook. The men were found guilty by a jury of stealing the sugar valued at £647 7s 6d and 127 tins of icing 'sugar valued at £ 158 15s from W. Scoular and Company, where Hall was employed as head storeman. Gerrie was in business on his own account.
Thomas Payne, a 30-year-old war pensioner, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment on a charge of attempted unlawful carnal knowledge. Francis Edward Pratt, aged 42,
a dealer, was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment when he appeared for sentence .on a charge of indecently assaulting a girl. Pratt had been found "not guilty of attempted rape, and guilty of indecent assault by a jury.
